Origin of Tartan
Tartan has an ancient history. The earliest known tartan in Scotland can be dated to the third or fourth century AD. In other parts of the world, tartan cloth has been found dating to approximately 3000 BC.
Virtually everywhere there was woven cloth, people created tartan designs. Yet only in Scotland have they been given such cultural significance.
Today tartan is no longer limited to textiles, but is also used as a name for the pattern itself. The use of tartan has spread outside the British Isles, particularly to countries who have been influenced by Scottish culture.
What is a Tartan design or pattern?
Tartan is made with alternating bands of coloured (pre-dyed) threads woven as both warp and weft at right angles to each other. The weft is woven in a simple twill, two over—two under the warp, advancing one thread at each pass. This pattern forms visible diagonal lines where different colours cross, which give the appearance of new colours blended from the original ones.
The resulting blocks of colour repeat vertically and horizontally in a distinctive pattern of squares and lines known as a sett which makes it unique. Tartan is often called “plaid” particularly in North America.
Although the two words share many similarities, there are some key differences between the words “plaid” and “ tartan” that should be considered, especially when it comes to the US and UK differentiations.
The word plaid, derived from the Scottish Gaelic plaide, meaning blanket, was first used of any rectangular garment. In time, plaid was used to describe blankets itselves.
Tartan fabric originally been made in woven wool, but now they are made in variety materials to date. To mention,tartan design blankets or throws are still ever popular up to these days.
What is the difference between tartan blanket and throw?
The main difference between throw and blanket layers is purpose. Blankets are designed for bed warmth and are laid atop other bedding layers.While in contrast, throws are a type of blanket and are more decorative.

For styling: Simply fold the throw lengthwise in half and then in half again. Then fold your throw in half widthwise. Drape your throw over the arm of the couch with the decorative edge (if your throw has one) down the side of the sofa. Do not allow the throw to extend below the bottom of the couch.
